About Osu Children’s Home
The Osu Children’s Home in Ghana had its origins from a Child Care Society which was established in 1949 by Ghanaian women and a Norwegian Lady to care for orphans and vulnerable children.
In 1962, the society was taken over by the then Government of Ghana and was placed under the jurisdiction of the Department of Social Welfare. It was then moved to its present location at Labone and renamed, Osu Children’s Home with the mandate to offer Care and Protection to children exposed to moral and Physical Danger.
The Home is under the Department of Social Welfare which is presently under the auspices of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.
The home provides the children in the home care and protection from appropriate skilled trained personel. This personel helps the children to come to terms with their various backgrounds and to help develop a positive approach towards their future endeavors.
ADOPTION
The Osu Children’s Home encourages Adoption because it is in line with our vision, to fully reintegrate all children admitted into the mainstream of society.
However, the Home only provides care for the children under its custody during which period a section of them who could not be reunified with the families are profiled for Adoption and others for Foster care. This means, the role of the Home in the child protection safe net is to cater for the daily basic needs of the children in its custody.
Adoption is therefore initiated in Greater Accra at the Regional Coordinating Council of the Department of Social Welfare in collaboration with the Head Office and the Central Adoption Authority.
ALKOT
Our Children between 3-5 years are prepared for school in an early Learning Development Center called ALKOT on the Home’s premises whilst Basic Schooling is done within the community. The children are given the opportunity to make the best of their abilities without hindrance.
The Home therefore has children in all levels of education; Tertiary, Senior High School, Junior High School, Vocational School, Elementary School, Special School.
Our Mission
To provide children in the Home with appropriate care through laid down regulations and procedures to afford them hope for a better future.
Our Vision
To fully reintegrate all children admitted into the Home into the mainstream of society.
VOLUNTEERING
Due to the nature of cases received at the Home and the lack in the provision of certain essential services that the children requires, the Home encourages the services of volunteers from specialised groups whose services will be relevant and beneficial to the children.
These includes volunteers in the likes of Doctors, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Clinical Psychologist, Counsellors and Teachers.
